The Best Storage Options for an RV, Trailer, or Camper

Maybe you’ve just recently joined the RVing bandwagon and are looking for RV storage for the first time. Or maybe you’ve got a few camping seasons under your belt but are ready to consider alternatives to storing your camper in your driveway.

Your RV is a big investment and you want to enjoy it for many years to come. Your trailer requires proper maintenance and care to keep you a happy camper down the road. This includes finding proper storage for it when you’re not travelling.

Types of RV Storage

Whether you only have access to street parking or your town or neighbours can’t stand the sight of your RV parked in your driveway, there’s a good chance you need a place to store your camper in the off-season.

Not all long term recreational vehicle storage options are created equal and you want to make the best choice to protect your investment.

Your choice will mainly come down to budget, your local weather, and how concerned you are about security. Before you make a commitment to a storage lot, let us give you a breakdown of the six types of RV storage available in Newfoundland.

Home RV Storage

Keeping your RV at home is common for many owners, however, it’s not without its challenges. While the price is right, you’ll need a driveway large enough to accommodate your trailer without forcing your other vehicles onto the street. Your RV will also be exposed directly to the harsh winter elements and will be more likely to be vandalized or stolen then if it were stored behind a locked enclosure.

Enclosed RV Storage

Think of enclosed RV storage as a private garage for your motorhome or travel trailer. Or something like a very large self-storage unit. With enclosed RV storage, your trailer is behind lock and key, which only you have access to. Just be sure to rent a unit large enough to fit your rig and also allow you to open the door.

While this is the most secure option, it’s also the most expensive type of RV storage.

Indoor RV Storage

While the privacy and security of a single enclosed unit might be appealing, there’s a much more affordable, and still secure option available to you with indoor RV storage.

Instead of a private garage, indoor RV storage is more like a parking garage where your trailer is stored alongside other vehicles.

Your camper is still protected from the elements and is secured behind a locked door. You’ll share access with other RV owners but sun, rain, and snow can’t get to your vehicle.

Our indoor facility at Waterford River Valley Campground is a 25,000 square foot warehouse with high bay (20′) ceilings and large overhead (18′ high) entry doors.  Space is divided into three sections allowing the provision of both heated and unheated space. Heated space is based on availability and demand.

Covered RV Storage

If you need an even more affordable option, but still want some protection from the Newfoundland elements, you can consider a covered RV storage lot. Think of it as a really big carport. Your camper will be outdoors, but under a roof that will shelter it from direct sunlight and precipitation. It’s a good compromise if you’re looking to balance benefits and budget.

While the lot should be protected by a fence and locked gate, you’ll want to also check to see if the facility has other security features such as perimeter lighting and video surveillance to deter potential burglars or vandals.

Outdoor RV Parking Space

If you’re looking for still cheaper off-site RV storage options, then you may want a simple RV parking space. Your camper will be kept in a fenced and gated parking lot with other vehicles for the winter season.

Remember that your vehicle will be exposed to the same manner of weather as it would in your driveway so you’ll likely also want to invest in a quality RV cover. If you have an older model RV, this might be a good option that will let you save some money.

Campsite Storage

We have a unique RV storage option at Waterford River Valley Campground. If you’re camping with us seasonally, you have the option to leave your trailer directly on your chosen campsite in the off-season. This is the most affordable storage option you’ll find on the island.

At Waterford River Valley Campground we offer indoor, outdoor, and campsite storage options. Whatever you choose, we have an RV storage option available for you, close to home in Mount Pearl, NL. Check out our rates and contact us today to reserve your spot.

Thanks for mentioning how an outdoor RV parking space is a cheap option. My parents need a place to store their RV before they take it across the country next month. I’ll have to send this to them in order to aid them to find a good storage place.
